Saika Alam

Partner - Child Law, Family Law

What do you do?

I head our Family law department and I am a member of both Resolution and the Law Society Advanced Family Law Panel. I have also trained as a Collaborative Family Lawyer. I qualified as a solicitor back in 1993 after graduating from the University of Wales and became a Partner here at Huggins in 2003.

Representing thousands of clients in a range of areas including divorce and separation, financial matters, cohabitee property disputes, prenuptial and cohabitation agreements, child arrangement orders and domestic abuse, I specialise in sorting out the thorny financial side of relationship breakdowns and I deal with the “high end” family law work in the firm.

Notable highlights in my work include: -

  • Successfully appealing against an order for child maintenance top-ups made against a footballer under Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989 at the High Court (Re TW and TM (Minors) [2015]);
  • Successfully appealing a fact-finding decision arising out of residence and contact proceedings in which Mostyn J rendered previous findings of fact unsafe and provided judicial guidance upon circumstances when appeals should be considered (AA v NA and KAB [2010] EWHC 1282)

Tell us about your clients

My clients come from a wide range of different backgrounds and different income brackets and no two cases are the same. Many have suffered a great deal of emotional stress by the time they realise they need a lawyer. I offer clear, straightforward and pragmatic advice to help them move forward with their lives in a way that works for them.

Why do your clients like working with you?

I try to solve problems in a pragmatic and cost-effective way. Getting to know my clients and what makes them tick is really important to me as it means that I can concentrate on their particular needs at a time when they may not be able do that for themselves.  I also recognise that life must move on and so my clients value my ability to manage expectations, keep the momentum going and to focus on the end result.
